HIS 371: Summer 2021 Examination#2
Write a full-length essay on any ONE of these questions. A full-length essay is NOT an outline; it is a detailed discussion (consisting of several paragraphs), showing evidence of adequate knowledge of the content materials. Grade will be based on evidence of your knowledge of information as well as the quality of your analyses.
1. Between 1880 and 1914, the entire continent of Africa, except for Ethiopia and Liberia, was conquered and colonized by about half-a-dozen European countries.
a. What motivated those industrialized European countries to set out to colonize Africa at the time they did? Be sure to explore the roles played by economic motivations, political motivations as well as social and cultural factors.
b. Although Africans put up spirited defense of their homelands, Europeans prevailed. Explain the reasons why Europeans were able to win.
2. During the 60 to 100 years of European colonial rule in Africa, African societies experienced profound social and cultural changes. While Europeans officially and unofficially introduced a number of changes, Africans themselves found ways to participate in those changes on their own terms, picking and choosing, and even mixing up the new ideas with the old, as they saw fit.
Drawing from our readings and discussions on the subject of colonialism and social change, discuss some of the significant social and cultural changes that occurred in Africa during the European colonial period. In your essay, be sure to explore medicine and healthcare, religion, education, city-life and popular culture, among others.
