An appraisal of research methodologies, searching for evidence and a reflection on utilising research in midwifery practice.

Develop a research question based on the clinical scenario and Beth’s question. Examine the advantages and disadvantages of qualitative and quantitative methodologies and evaluate whether quantitative OR qualitative research better answers the question. Develop a search strategy to identify research that is focused on your research question. Reflect on how research can influence your future learning and midwifery practice.

Clinical scenario:
You are a midwife working in an antenatal clinic. Beth is nine weeks pregnant with her first baby and attends to complete her booking history. In line with the recommendations of the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative (2018), you ask Beth if she knows anybody who has breastfeed their baby. She tells you that none of her friends have breast fed their babies and seems unsure about it. With her permission you talk through some of the benefits of breast feeding to her and to her baby. She is curious to learn more about breastfeeding and her baby’s brain development and
asks for more information and evidence to support this. You are unsure about the evidence and agree to do some research to discuss with her at her next appointment.

The assignment must be presented in the style of a report, with the following suggested headings and content:

• Outline key methodological terms
• Discuss and compare the advantages and disadvantages of employing qualitative and quantitative research methodologies to explore the scenario
• Outline and justify which research methodology (qualitative or quantitative) you would employ to research the scenario

Research question and search process (200 words approx.)
• Construct a focused clinical research question based upon the given scenario and your chosen methodological approach (quantitative or qualitative), using any one of the frameworks that you have learnt about e.g., PICO, SPICE, SPIDER, PRoPHeT, PEO etc.
• Explain how you arrived at your clinical research question, including the use of a framework
• Describe, and justify the sources you used to find evidence
• Describe, and justify how you constructed and refined your search
• Include a copy of your search in the appendix (this does not count towards the word limit)

A reflection on how research can influence your own midwifery learning and practice (500 words approx.)
