Objective: Students will conduct academic research to develop and compose a four- page descriptive/expository essay of America’s political frame and cultural relevance through the philosophical view of Political Democratic Activist, Upton Sinclair’s authorship, The Jungle.
Introduction: Because Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle takes place in America’s 1906- time frame, it is classified as Naturalism in American Literature. American Literature’s Naturalism focuses upon the lower class who is under-educated or uneducated; moreover, while residing in Urban settings. They are characterized by an environment that provides only an allusion of freedom. Most live by events controlled by forces beyond their ability to maintain authority. In this political natural frame- work, Sinclair takes a plunge creating a fictious development about the employment conditions of immigrants in Chicago alongside migrants. The Jungle explores the employment and work life of the immigrants that are unsustainably developed, economically. As Upton Sinclair is a democratic thinker, his desires to sound the alarm of a society that is forgotten, at work. The work forgottenness is America’s 1906 dilemma due to major corporation’s eagerness to gain generational profits. The meatpacking industry is no different than the Ford’s or the Rockefeller’s. The meat industry placed meats on every American table while sparring the expense of sanitation. Thus, the Federal Meat Act was drafted. Upton Sinclair will always remain an intrinsic fiber in American literary, political and democratic history.

The Academic Rubric: The research project can be a choice of one sub-topic highlighting the New Historicism Criticisms. The sub-topics are, Upton Sinclair, the Democratic Thinker, The Immigrant and the Migrant- A Common Vortex or America’s 1906 Woman. The research paper must be four pages in length not including the Cover Page and the Work Cited Page. Each page should consist of three paragraphs with a minimum of five sentences each. The total four pages must contain sixty sentences, Modern Language Association format (MLA). This is not only a research project but an academic writing research project. Capitalization, Punctuation, Grammar, Logical Sequence with Sentence Structure is an absolute. Editing is vital. The ability to cite credible sources is necessary when performing academic research. This project is due November 2nd at 11:59 p.m. and late submission will not be accepted. The project is worth one hundred points. This is a major assignment!
