Bierstadt’ and The music lesson

1. Take a look at Bierstadt’s Yosemite Valley and Vermeer’s The Music Lesson (I’ll send you images of these). The first is painted on an outdoor scene and the second is an indoor scene. Both paintings achieve a concrete kind of visual realism. How do these artists achieve this? – What are their methods? Here you would like to discuss the use of pictorial depth and composition cues or rules. Sometimes realistic artworks with such a clear vision are described as “delusional”. Do you think this is an appropriate way to represent the visual realism achieved? When addressing this question, you need to clarify how to interpret the word “confusion”. A good model can be the way in which a skilled magician “fools our eyes”. Are our eyes generally (or ever) fooled into this “sorcerer’s trick” in seeing works of visual art? Here you would like to say something about the non-illustrated depth and motion parallax-like structure cues on which we rely on everyday perception. Is there such non-pictorial depth and composition information available in viewing works of visual art? what lessons do you take
