Parameters:
Time New Roman 12-point font Titled
Double Spaced 2-4 pages. Assignment:
For your paper, I’d like you to identify a thematic statement, but your thesis statement will develop that statement into a topic.
Please choose from the readings we have read in class: Picture Us in the Light by Kelly Loy Gilbert, They Called Us Enemy by George Takei, or How to Be an American Housewife by Margaret Dilloway.
For this paper, your thematic statement will be important. It will shape all of the details you use from the story to support your thesis. Consider how your theme is reflected through the Asian-American experience but how it can become a universal theme as well.
• Create a thematic statement
• Use the text, focusing on the Asian-American experience in your chosen story, to show how the theme is reflected in the story
• As you use details from the text, please make sure you explain how the text applies to your thematic statement – be sure to cite the text
• Explain how this theme is also a universal theme by including examples of real world experiences that are non Asian-American experiences (not personal experiences)
