Start with a question. Gather at least 10 high-quality sources that can help you answer your question (at least 5 must be peer reviewed journals). Formulate a thesis (one sentence statement of opinion) in answer to your question. Create a focused, unified paper of at least 2000 words which uses your research to make a compelling argument in support of your thesis. Include a properly formatted Works Cited page listing all of the sources you used in your paper.
Using a variety of quality sources helps to establish your authority. Remember, you are the expert and you must present yourself as an expert. A paper in which all ten sources come from the same journal does not inspire confidence in the reader that you have looked wide and far in your research.
Make sure your writing has no less than 50% active voice sentences. Minimize use of the passive verbs. The paper should have a strong sense of focus.
