limnology extended abstract

RUBRIC
An Extended Abstract within the context of this assignment is an INFORMATIVE summary of the entire paper
which provides an overview of the problem/objectives, hypothesis, background issues, major findings and
conclusions/implications set forth in the publication. I am asking that your abstract be 600-800 words, which is
longer than the standard brief abstract included at the beginning of most scientific publications. These extended
abstracts should be much broader than the standard scientific summary. I want you to develop the scientific
issue at hand by including background information on the topic/problem. I also want you to cite at least two
additional papers that are central to the problem/results of the publication you have selected for review. These
citations should be within the abstract text and listed in a reference section as per acceptable citation format (see
Inland Waters Guide to Authors). Critical thinking and synthesis of research ideas is expected.

The organization of your Extended Abstract should include:
1) The title and full citation of the selected peer-reviewed publication
2) A brief introduction to the field of study
3) A statement of the problem being addressed AND hypothesis being tested
4) A short description of the approach/study design (detailed methods are usually not included)
5) A summary of the results
6) Discussion statements that tell what the results mean and the impact of this work on the field. What is
the contribution? What have we learned?
7) At the bottom of each abstract there should be full citations of the three publications that were central to
the problem being addressed. Proper in-text citing format should also be applied.
