Read the prompts below. Choose one. In at least two double-spaced pages, answer the prompt. You must provide evidence (quotes from the book) to support your thesis. You must cite the page numbers from where your quotes came from. You may use any citation style as long as you are providing the page number and it is consistent. Do not use internet sources. Please only use examples and evidence from the chapters covered during the first three weeks of class (Chapters 1-8).
Prompts (choose one)
1) Liberty and Freedom
Discuss the evolving meanings of liberty and freedom amongst English colonists. How did understandings of liberty and freedom differ between the colonies? What shaped colonists’ understandings of liberty and freedom?
2) Slavery
Discuss how the institution of slavery differed between 2-3 English colonies/regions. (For example, you may compare the Chesapeake with New England or the Carolinas.) How did work, crops, and conditions of servitude differ?
3) Colonization
Discuss how the colonization of North America differed between 2-3 European empires such as the Spanish, English, French, etc. (Do not compare more than three empires.) What did each empire see as their purpose for colonization? How did they organize their colonial societies?
