Assignment 3: Coming to America

Now that you are more familiar with three cultures, two for tradition (Assignment 1) and one for the modern situation (Assignment 2), it is time to apply some concepts. These concepts appear on the slides from the start of the class, called Introduction to the Class. The slides have been copied to the Part 3 block.
First, the situation.
During travels, your friend made a few friends along the way. You now know some of them from social media as real people rather
than some abstract foreigners. Your friend comes to you with a request: one of these friends from abroad wants to come to California.
Can you use what you have learned in anthropology to help make a case to grant a Visa or other permit for entry, and perhaps Citizenship in the future?
The assignment:
Write a brief essay, using two anthropological concepts to make a case for this person. The person comes from one of the three cultures you have written about in previous assignments. Briefly state their culture and situation. Then, use any two of the following concepts from the Introduction to the Class slides to argue why they should be able to come to America: holism, comparison, cultural relativism,
tradition, race and migration. What does the person and their culture bring to American culture?
The reason for coming is up to you: political oppression, economic opportunity, religious persecution, physical safety due to gangs or war, etc. Whatever the reason, let’s stay away from partisan politics in favor of the human element.
