For step 3 of your reflexive research project you will explore social science sources relevant to your ethnicity, particularly the development of its American status.
What were some of the main events that affected individuals of your ethnicity over time? What were the outcomes of these events?
In what ways did these events contribute to your ethnicity’s status in America at the time that they occurred?
What are some lasting influences of these events on this ethnic group in American today?
How do these events shape your own conceptualization of your ethnicity?
If you chose to address more than one ethnicity, continue to compare and contrast.
Resources for this Step:
Our focus this step is Social Science. Review the disciplinary guide about social sceince methods and principles before choosing your sources.
You must use 4 – 5 documents that use social science methods, such as data analysis, ethnography (this is where oral history and social science overlap) to identify patterns that affect individuals and groups. You can choose from Working, National Archives, the US Census Bureau, and/or another creditable archive or database of records about work life, income, and policies that affected laborers.
You must use 1 secondary source, that is, a contemporary essay, article, or video on a particular issue or event. It can be from the course material or the library, or you can find one online. If the latter, check Evaluating Web Pages. to assure you are using a credible source.
Cite Natives and Strangers. You may refer to sections about a particular ethnicity, event, or issue.
