DB #9: After watching MCAA Founder Tom White’s video on “Vision, Mission, and Values”, Dr. Jim Loehr’s on “Repurposing Sports”, and Sean Adams “The Real Importance of Sports” videos, please follow the advice of Coach Close and Steven Covey by “beginning with the end in mind” and create the vision for your team/program/department. A vision is a picture of the desired future that you create a plan for translating into reality. After you share your vision, provide a minimum of two full paragraphs expressing why it is important and significant. Begin your Vision Statement with, “The Vision of (name of your team or program or organization) is…”
Here are some questions to think about as you construct your vision statement and express why it is significant:
• What does your ideal Program/Department/Staff/Team look like? What images come to mind?
• What is special about your hopes and dreams for the extraordinary program or department you will create?
• How is it distinctive compared to plans leaders at other schools or universities have?
• When you revisit this project 10-15 years from now into the future, what will it look like?
• How does your plan anticipate change and success deep into the future, given the innovations and trends you forecast over the next decade?
DB #10: Create a Mission Statement for your team/program/department. Remember that a mission statement should succinctly express the reason for your organization’s existence. It should be clear, compelling, and memorable. After you share your Mission Statement, explain in a minimum of two full paragraphs why it is compelling and what the benefits of committing to it are. Begin your Mission Statement with, “The Mission of (name of your team or program or organization) is…”
In responding to #11 below, you can consider listing broader values such as Character Development, Educational Achievement, or Competitive Excellence and not just merely listing several characteristics/traits/values such as integrity, resilience, hard work, etc.
DB #11: List and describe three to five Prioritized Core Values that you will utilize to guide you in pursuit of your vision and mission. Remember, it is critical to list them in order of importance so that if they ever come into conflict with one another, you will defer to the higher prioritized value. You should provide, at a minimum, at least one full paragraph supporting each value, explaining why each one is essential and extremely valuable. Before you list and describe your core values, write a brief paragraph explaining why core values are necessary and important.
