Please answer each question within the given word limit. Each answer should make use
of/reference course material. Answer’s that reference each assigned reading will be graded higher than
answers which reference only some of the assigned readings.
(1) Hausman argues that health differences among individuals are difficult to measure (pp.60-3). How
might a theory of health like Boorse’s help overcome this challenge? (300 words)
(2) Machland et al. consider two maximin theories of how health relates to inequality. One (Theory 4 on
your handout) claims that we should maximize the health of those who are the sickest, or worst off.
Discuss how this view has to be amended in order to bypass Arrow’s bottomless pit objection. (300
words)
(3) What is the significance of the syllogism “Cauis is a man; all men are mortal; therefore Cauis is mortal”
in the Death of Ivan Illych? Engage with Kamm. (300 words)
