Explain both the geographical and political results of Versailles and other treaties, and how these might have contributed to laying the seeds for World War II.

For this week’s discussion, please consider the following questions in crafting your response. You may wish to have a look at the following two map resources in thinking about some of these questions: Empires before World War I and Europe in 1920.
In the aftermath of World War I, who defined the terms of the peace? Explain both the geographical and political results of Versailles and other treaties, and how these might have contributed to laying the seeds for World War II. A French general once said that the Treaty of Versailles was not a peace but a “20 year armistice” – do you agree with this statement? Why did peace ultimately fail? Be sure to elaborate on the most salient reasons you see for the rise of fascism, Nazism and Stalinism, using your readings to support your interpretation. Be sure to cite from our primary source readings this week, which include the Treaty of Versailles, and writings by Hitler and Mussolini.
