Cultures shape how people communicate. Examine the connections between the high- and low-context communication styles and the Hofstede’s cultural value dimensions (e.g., individualism-collectivism, power distance, etc.) based on the team members’ cultural identity. Do you find that certain types of communication styles are associated with particular cultural dimensions? Attempt to explain the associations you find. For example, in team “SER,” Robin and Emerson tend to have high-context message styles and they also seem to identify with the Italian culture, which scores lower on individualism. According to Nam (2015), in collectivistic cultures (i.e., cultures scoring lower on individualism), individuals tend to focus on maintaining harmony in their relationships and groups. As a result, they are less likely to be direct and explicit with their messages to avoid hurting other’s feelings. Instead, they are more likely to communicate “between the lines” using non-verbal elements, such as emotions, gestures, and facial expressions. Discuss at least three associations you could find.
