Write a paper that makes a clear, well-supported, and entertaining claim about a specific dish you have recently consumed. This must be a specific food item (e.g., macaroni and cheese) as executed by a specific restaurant or cook (e.g. my brother’s mac and cheese, the mac and cheese at Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles in downtown Long Beach).

In this essay, you should first write an introduction in which you introduce the food item, discuss its cultural importance (who eats it? How popular is it? What is its nutritional value? What is its emotional or experiential value?), and identify the specific source of the item (if you are writing about a particular mac and cheese, burrito, or other, such as your brother’s mac and cheese or Maya’s Boyle Heights Burrito) and make your claim about the item (thesis). (Note that you can have any verdict on the item; for example, I could argue that LeRoy’s Chicken and Waffles are better than Roscoe’s, even though Roscoe’s is more iconic as an institution.)
Next, compose at least three body paragraphs in which you elaborate on the qualities above, offering your analysis of the food item’s effectiveness and evaluating its success or appeal while supporting your thesis with specific details and examples. This is where you will have to clearly establish your criteria and evaluate how the item fulfills them (or doesn’t)!
Finally, conclude by further elaborating your thesis and explaining why your evaluation of this food item should be necessary reading for all consumers.
Here are some questions for prewriting (you do not need to directly answer them in order in the paper):
Who is the intended user or audience of the food you are reviewing? Do the producers of this food make the right kinds of decisions about how to appeal to that audience?
Even if you decide you don’t like the food you’re reviewing, can you see how it might work for other people?
How does this dish stack up against similar foods? Does it represent an advance or innovation for the category or genre that it belongs to?
What kinds of criteria are you using to make your evaluation? Are these criteria shared by people in your intended audience? If not, can you persuade your audience that your criteria are preferable?
What kind of background does your audience need to know about to understand your evaluation?
I will be talking about an essay on tamales and my family history a little background my grandmother mother and I use to make them every 23rd of December for Christmas Eve. We would make pork tamales in red sauce and cheese tamales my favorite. I plan on passing this tradition on to my daughter.
