Task 1:

Using Google Earth and supplementing with any tool you choose, map the following three lakes in Osceola County (Michigan) including the following measures:

Lakes – Hicks Lake, Todd Lake, Wells Lake.
greatest width
greatest length
calculate approximate surface area in square meters and acres
describe with geographic coordinates (degrees, minutes, seconds).
provide latitude, longitude and elevation
explain what baselines and measures latitude and longitude are base on (include specific locations)

Task 2:

Using Google Earth and supplementing with any tool you choose, map and describe the lunar landings including the following:

Geographic location of lunar landing sight (Apollo Space Missions only).
Using geographic coordinates of the Apollo 11 landing site, where would that be on Earth?
Approximate geographic surface area in each mission
Approximate distance between landing sites and an overall representation of relative landing site locations
Dimensions of Little West Crater and Double Crater (Apollo 11 – may need to zoom in on landing area)
Dimensions of Head Crater (Apollo 12)
Tell me about the weird rock
Describe Rima Hadley
What is the story behind Ballet Crater?
Width, length and surface area of landing sight or the length of the path traveled (use either light grey area or the black path lines)
Geographic coordinates of each landing sight and approximate distance between each in kilometers
Latitude, longitude and approximate elevation (if available)
explain what baselines and measures latitude and longitude are based on (include specific locations)
incorporate information about experiments, activities, and cameras from each landing area into your deliverable
Task 3

There are two course outcomes associated with this assignment: 1) Research the purposes of Geographic Information Systems options, and 2) Assess tools and technologies for appropriate use in a Geographic Information Systems environment. In one to two pages address both of these outcomes. For example, describe what common capabilities and applications are currently available for GIS technology would address outcome 1. Remember, you are doing things like calculating distance, area, and plotting location (which addresses outcome 1). Describing what GIS options may be available both within Google Earth or using another tool/technique to accomplish this assignment would address outcome 2. So when you address the second outcome you can critique the Google Earth toolset in accomplishing the assignment and maybe propose alternative methods to do the same thing. Task 3 would be an area where you would probably want two or three external references for both outcomes (total of about 6 references – APA or MLA format).

Your project can be submitted as a Word or pdf document and/or include a video. It is possible to create tours within Google Earth that can be converted to MP4 files with Movie Maker within Google Earth, but there is a bug that some will encounter where the audio is not captured (only the video). Therefore the option for a document, video, or combination of document and video as your deliverable.
