Observation 4: Look at the classroom as a community. How do the group of students and the teacher function as a whole? What are the dynamics between students, between all the students and the teacher? Look at levels of comfort and warmth, tone of voice, body posture, etc. Are the teacher’s interactions conducive to each individual student’s needs and abilities as well as to the class as a whole? What is the atmosphere in general (i.e., fun, serious, chaotic, etc.). Are there power issues among students, or ways in which the teacher seems to discriminate or is unfair in their treatment of differentstudents or groups of students? What does the teacher do to create a sense of the classroom as community? Is the teacher successful? What kind of learning environment do you see?
