Discussion Forum Prompt

For the purposes of discussion, situate the film into the classical period of the horror genre to which it belongs. How is the expression of the myth clearly done in the classical mode? (Consider who the protagonist is, the nature of the film’s resolution, the presence of master narratives, a homogeneous world.)

Next, use the assigned reading by Robin Wood and determine which categories of the “Other” the film contains. What does the “Other” of the film symbolically represent? How is it ultimately dealt with? What, in the film, defines “normality” and how is the “Other” threatening “normality”?

Finally, and this should be woven throughout your argument, interpret how the cultural determinants of the period influence the story. Consult the lectures slides for examples, but the most pronounced will likely be the Great Depression, rising fear of fascism, and women’s growing role in the workforce.
