Learning Journals

Guidelines: 3 pages; double spaced; submit as pdf.; include a title page and APA references
With this journal entry you are going to do a more in-depth exploration of your Emotional Intelligence.
Step 1: Use the model that we have worked with to do a self-assessment of your Emotional Intelligence
strengths. The picture below will help you consider each of the 5 main categories of the EI model.
Identify your 2 greatest EI strengths and your 2 greatest EI opportunities for Improvement. Be specific
in describing these and provide examples that support your assessment.

Step 2: You will explore a very important question – how do others experience me?
Identify two people whose opinions you value. You may want to choose people from different areas of
your life. Ask them to identify your top three strengths and your top three opportunities for
improvement or growth.
In order to collect “good data” you will have to create a comfortable environment for people to be
honest with you. Tell them how you are going to use the information and why it’s valuable to you.

Step 3: Briefly compare or relate to your personal assessment of your strengths and opportunities. Any
surprises?

Step 4: Choose one area of opportunity and create a development plan This plan should include the
following:
• A clearly stated goal – what is it that you want to change or shift
• Your rationale – why is this important to you personally and to your HR career
• Your action plan which includes:
o Two resources that you will read, watch or listen to (I recommend Tedtalks, podcasts or
articles)
o The anchor that will help you to practice the changes
• Desired outcome – how will you know that you’ve been successful in changing your behaviour?
You will put your plan into practice over the term. In your final ePortfolio, you will reflect on your
experience and the progress you have made.
