Cognition refers to all mental activities involved with thinking, knowing, attention, problem-solving, remembering, and communicating. Consider the ideas of Piaget and Vygotsky in terms of how they believe children gain these skills. Think back, also, to what we discussed in In the Beginning. How do you think we go from being infants whose mental activities are unknown to us a adults (we know there are many things going on in their little brains, but we don’t really understand how they are going on) to being toddlers who can communicate in all sorts of ways, to being adolescents who are so much more sophisticated in their thinking and communicating. Think about the two theories, but also think about what YOU think or have observed.
