Usability means how useful, usable, and satisfying a system is for the intended users to accomplish goals in the work domain by performing certain sequences of tasks (UTHealth, 2011). When it comes to the nursing field, the HER or the electronic health record is a huge tool where patients information gets inputted so everyone on the health care team can track the patient’s health. Every hospital has very similar programs that contain the EHR but is their usability within the correct level. When it comes to the three terms to describe usability there are three goals that comes with it.
Is the EHR program useful? The goal is to make sure the system supports the work that needs to be done (UTHealth, 2011). So, the EHR that is being used must categorize everything properly and have all the functions that is needed to input patient data. If so, then it is useful.
Is the EHR program usable? The goal here is to make sure that every nurse, doctor, health care professional knows how to use it correctly (UTHealth, 2011). We want to make sure that it is easy to learn, efficient and more importantly error tolerant. That means that it should notify the user when an error has been made and aid in fixing it. If the EHR program passes those three things, then it is usable.
Is the EHR satisfying? This is asking if the EHR if getting the job done correctly and timely (UTHealth, 2011). The goal with this is to make sure that the user likes using this program. In the end we want the entire staff to like what they are using because they are using it all the time while at work. It is important that it satisfies all of its users. So, if people are liking and agreeing that it helps them succeed in the workplace, then it is satisfying.
In the end, the EHR is the most important document regarding your patient’s health outcome because it contains every piece of information regarding their stay in the hospital. If the EHR does not meet the requirements of usability, then maybe a different EHR system is going to need to be used.
