What is the Beer Criteria and what is its significance in prescribing? This is a well-known list of medications for geriatric patients. This list identifies drugs with an increased likelihood of causing reactions in the geriatric population. It is important when prescribing medication because it helps to remind the practitioner to take special precautions when prescribing these medications (AGSBC, 2019).
What is the safest method of calculating a medication dose for the pediatric patient? Calculating a pediatric dose is safest using the patient’s body weight. The drug dose is based on the child’s surface area (Rosenthal & Burchum, 2021).
At what time period in a pregnancy can medication potentially have the greatest risk of causing malformations? The embryonic period (first trimester) is the period of time when the fetus is at greatest risk for malformations due to medication.
If your patient sometimes forgets to take her medication, what type of medication half-life would be beneficial? A medication with an extended half life is more beneficial because it stays in the system longer allowing the patient time to take the missed dose (Rosenthal & Burchum, 2021).
Your patient is on the highest daily dose of his medication and it is not giving him the desired effect. What type of metabolizer is he with this medication? If the patient is experiencing this it would seem they metabolize the drug at a faster rate than the average person. The drug is being eliminated too quickly and not allowing for a therapeutic window of benefit from the drug.

One particular food that has been shown to adversely interact with medications is grapefruit juice. It has been shown to inhibit the metabolism of certain medications and therefore leads to elevated levels of unmetabolized drugs to stay in the bloodstream (Understanding Food and Medication Interactions, 2013).
