Explicit essay on The Lay of the Motor-Car

To write a coherent explication essay that “unfolds” a poem, the writer interprets what the lines of
verse say and identifies the poetic and rhetorical devices. This type of academic writing, therefore—
in its essential form—answers what and how about a poem: What does the poem say? How does the
poet achieve it? The writer sequentially examines what the poem says and how the poet employs
poetic devices and language, such as the connotations of words, allusions, figurative language, irony,
symbol, rhythm, alliteration, and so on. Textual evidence of these devices must be embedded to
support all points. This explication paper will not answer why; in other words, the essay will not
analyze the techniques’ or devices’ effect on theme or tone.
