This paper is for a structural geology course. I have included the specific requirements and deadlines.
TERM PAPER PROJECT: Term Paper Policies and Guidelines
The purpose of the term paper is to introduce library research of specific topics, in this case Structural Geology, in order to give practice in synthesizing theoretical data into a concise paper, and to introduce written and oral communication of science (one of the most important aspects of science and consulting, and of course, teaching). The project will culminate in an oral presentation on the paper material.
Guidelines: The following is required for satisfactory completion of the Term Paper Project:
1. Successful meeting of 4 deadlines: (Early submissions are encouraged.)

These deadlines are firm. Any lateness results in reduction at the letter grade scale. Before choosing your topic by the first
deadline, be sure to research and examine/read a few papers on your chosen topic(s) to be satisfied that the topic is interesting to you (very important), and that there is enough material out there to be able to write the paper.
2. Paper format: At least 3000 words, double spaced and spell-checked. The final paper is expected to have been
edited thoroughly for errors (e.g., typos, etc.). Errors count against your grade.
3. The written style of the paper should conform to major scientific journals (e.g., Geology; Journal of Metamorphic Geology). You must follow the style in the Journal of Structural Geology for this project.
4. References:
a. Properly formatted list of references (minimum of five; formatted just as in the J. Struct. Geol.). I highly recommend using a reference manager (endnote or similar), which can be downloaded for free as a student, and remove all effort on your part, and keep you organized!
b. References in the list must be cited in the paper and vice versa.
c. Limit references to properly reviewed material found only in published journals (including electronic journals.
d. I encourage the use of the Internet as a guide in finding sources and information (allow me and/or a librarian to help you), however, use of “Internet publications” (unreviewed material) for your paper is generally unacceptable. Figures could be an exception to this rule, but check with me first.
e. Do not (generally) use textbooks as references material. The information in text books is usually a simple summary of someone else’s work; always go to the original journal articles cited in those books. By all means use these books, e.g., Fossen and Twiss & Moores, as reference guides to journal articles.
5. Figures: Please use as many figures as you can- they are often necessary to get across a point made in your text, and you will need them for your presentation. If you use figures they should occupy a full page with a proper caption (written by you – don’t copy the journal article’s caption) and proper references indicating the figure’s source, unless you authored the figure.
