THINKING PIECE

Think Piece Assignment (1000-1250 words + Works Cited page):

For this assignment you will write a short essay (1000-1250 words + Works Cited page) comparing a contemporary news story about any aspect of the COVID-19 pandemic (from a reputable news source) with Ling Ma’s novel Severance, which we will read and discuss in Module 3. I would like you to write a “think piece”-style essay, like the kind of thing you would find on a clever, critical website such as the Los Angeles Review of Books, The Guardian, or The Atlantic. I still want you to use MLA formatting (so citations and a works cited page, not hyperlinks, which are more typical for online writing), but your style and argument should be like a think piece, and not necessarily like an academic essay. Your piece should have a title and a clear argument. Yes, think pieces have arguments! In fact, the title of a think piece often is its argument, or at least hints strongly at what its argument will be (hence: “clickbait”).
