Get your notetaking materials ready. At a minimum, you should collect the 6?s, but also the title of the speech, date and the URL of the specific speech of your choice. (If you don’t know what I am talking about when I say the 6 ?s then you obviously skipped over the How to Write a Summary lesson in the previous assignment bar! Yikes! GO BACK AND WATCH THE POWER POINT)
Select 1 performance. You can search by topic and/or popularity. The speeches are all approximately the same length.
Test drive your selection, to ensure you can understand the speaker. Because some of them are from other countries, you may need to deal with different dialects.
View your selection 1 time all the way through. Don’t bother collecting data on this run.
On the 2nd and perhaps 3rd run, collect the data. Do not forget the speech, date and URL!
After you finish viewing, draft your summary. It should run between 50 to 120 words, with about 100 being perfect. I’m more concerned with content than length.
Edit the summary, ensuring that:
You personally are not referenced anywhere in the summary (In other words this isn’t written from your point of view- no 1st person). No 2nd person either (the word YOU should not be in your summary)
The first sentence includes the author, format (TEDTalk) and title.
The rest of the summary covers the 6?s (or addresses why something is missing). (If you do not know what the 6 ?s are then you need to go back to the summary lesson tab and read the power point carefully.)
The content of the summary is all factual (do not judge the content).
Proofread the summary, checking that:
All verbs are in the same tense ( use all present tense).
All sentences are complete (no fragments).
There are variations in the sentence starts (do not have several sentences all beginning with the word “the”).
The words “I” and “you” are nowhere in the entire summary. This helps ensure your summary stays on topic.
Check that there are a variety of sentence types (more than just simple or just compound).
Check spelling, punctuation, and word choice.
