A cover letter has one job: to separate out your resume from other similar resumes. Therefore, every sentence — every sentence — of a cover letter should show why *you* are the right person for this organization, and why this organization is the right place for you. If any of the sentences could have been written by other applicants, cut those sentences. A cover letter normally has these features:
a first paragraph about your relationship with the target organization — how you know them and why you like them
a second paragraph highlighting and explaining (not just repeating) your resume
a third paragraph on your background, the personal events that led to your professional commitments
a fourth paragraph that signs off in a savvy (not stiff) way, signaling your interest in an interview.
All this fits comfortably, with no crowding, on one side of one page.
I would suggest writing the cover letter to a company you may potentially apply for in the future.
(written to any organization of your choice) PLUS attached resume as a Word file (not .pages). (NO GOOGLE DOCS) (no Pages, rtf docs.)
