selling the american way

Humorist Will Rogers once said that “Advertising is the art of convincing people to spend money they don’t have for something they don’t need.” Still haunted by the Great Depression, Americans needed to be coaxed into enjoying their new-found affluence in the post-war period.

Before responding to this week’s discussion board assignment:

Please watch the Intelecom video–The Unfinished Nation: The Way We Were.
For this week’s discussion, please respond to the following questions:

Please describe how television affected American political and consumer culture in the 1950s? Using specific examples, discuss the role of psychology and the efforts of Rosser Reeves in perfecting the art of advertising, the re-imaging of political campaigns, and the selling of American foreign policy. In your response, discuss the perceived paradox between these marketing efforts and the forced conformity attributed to the Communists in the Soviet Union.
Today, advertising is a $240 billion industry in the United States alone (2019). On average, Americans are exposed to over 5,000 advertisements in a single day (2007). Using specific examples, how does advertising continue to manipulate, shape, or transform American society?
Ideally, your initial response to the discussion board questions should exceed 500 words. At least one of your replies to your classmates’ posts should exceed 125 words. Submissions will be graded according to content, accuracy, and the degree of knowledge and analytical insight produced in your essay. Students are strongly encouraged to incorporate the provided outside resources into their essays to strengthen their responses.
