Music cognition and perception is a field that addresses some of the fundamental issues of music in human life. One of the questions concerns whether or not music has evolutionary origins in human development (cognitive and biological).
Levitin’s argument that music IS an evolutionary imperative, while Pinker (and others) counter that music exploits pleasure-seeking “spandrels” in the brain. Is music, in other words, a biological necessity (are we hard-wired for it) or is it “auditory cheesecake”?
