what is the value of studying the humanites

1. You must reference the readings. You may do this through careful and concise paraphrase using signal phrasing to let me know where the content is coming from (in other words, make it clear that you are not passing the material off as your own). You may also use direct quotes but do so sparingly, and take care in introducing the qualifications of the writer you are quoting.

2. You must include a criticism (from the assigned reading) and your counter argument (also from the assigned reading). Think of your experience with answering the criticisms discussion board– that might help you think about how to touch on this in your paper.

3. You must write original content that is yours, and yours alone. This includes everything from word choice to…. just not plagiarizing.

4. You can choose to write about the value of humanities education for general college students or for you personally. This means you may frame your response in either first person (I, me) or third person (people, audience). Please pick one and be consistent. Please notes that “we” and “you” are not appropriate voices. “We” is plural, but you are just one person and you do not speak for the field of study yet. “You” is second person, reflexive and confusing to the reader.
2-3 pages. You should not write less than 2 pages (or whatever page length is directly specified). A page is complete when the addition of another line takes you to the next page. A page and a half is not 2 pages. A single line short of the final page is understandable. I’m a weird stickler about this one, so just make sure to reach that page requirement.
1.5 Line Spacing. Please remove any extra empty line breaks before and after paragraphs. I went to college too– I know they’re just a way to artificially eat up page length and make your paper seem longer. Pro Tip: Set word defaults to avoid these additional spaces. Set it and forget it. No one uses additional spaces before and after paragraphs, not even expedient business memos.
Standard Margins. 1″ all around. This shouldn’t even be something that you have to play around with since Word does it automatically.
Standard Fonts. Acceptable fonts include Times New Roman, 12pt., Calibri, 11pt., or Arial 11pt. No other fonts and sizes are accepted because again… I know about creating artificial page length.
First and Last Name ONLY in the right-hand corner. Please include no other content to artificially lengthen your paper.
Write in paragraphs. Paragraphs have a single main idea and supporting content. If you change ideas, change paragraphs.
Get to the point. Please avoid lengthy introductions and conclusions. This is not the place for attention grabbers and narrative hooks. Introduce the reader to your overall topic and then jump in– I’m excited to just read about your ideas, so no need to spend 12 lines just revving up. In the conclusion simply review the points you made and be done.
