If someone from another planet came to Earth and wandered about the Western world, they could easily get the impression that leadership is about people who lead on the big stage of life – political leaders, CEOs, activists to name a few. However, one of the principal beliefs in the Leadership programs here at U of G is that everyone can exhibit leadership and that, as a result, leadership matters whether you are on the big stage or whether you are leading in your school, your club or your community. This activity explores that idea.
For the first part of this activity, due by Wednesday February 9th at 11:59 PM, consider how the pandemic has upended lives in the past two(!) years and how so many people who are not big-stage, national or provincial/state political leaders have stepped up. Find a story that talks about such a person/leader and post it to the discussion board, with a link to the story as part of your post. Explain why you picked this person and what insights into leadership you get from their story.
Don’t choose a story written by a leadership expert, but rather a local-hero type story, written by a reporter for a newspaper/news site/broadcast station or other media outlet (not a blog or other already-analyzed description of a leader). Remember, we’re not looking for political leaders, whose job it is to deal with the pandemic, but for everyday folks who have stepped up to lead.
