Our questions this week should be a bit obvious. What is sampling? What is its function? How is Kanye’s sampling instructive in and beyond hip hop? If it’s not clear so far, one of the questions behind all our questions is that of time or temporality—how Black people feel time, take, make, and keep time, and are subject to time’s violent and arbitrary movement—so one of the questions we need to think about regarding sampling is: how does sampling warp time (and space) in Black music?
