Essay format is described below:
1. Introduction:
In this section, the student should provide a bit of background about the essay and identify the questions.
This section should answer the reader’s question: What is this essay about?
1. Body of Paragraphs:
In this section, the student should describe and explain the essay. Try to organize the information.
2. Conclusions:
Wrap up the ideas and restate the topic sentence.
Below are some guidelines to help students with the composition of their essay assignments.

Length
• Please carefully note the word count, as indicated in the assignment instructions.
• The word count includes all words in the text of the assignment.
• The word count does not include:
o Tables
o Diagrams
o Glossaries/appendices
o The reference list at the end.
• In-text references are included in the word count.
• You must state the actual word count on the title page of your submission.
• Please check with Student Support if you feel unclear about any of the above.
Please carefully note the word count for this work. You should aim for a length within 10% of this. Any words beyond this limit will not be marked and hence will not contribute to your grade. Any work significantly shorter than this is unlikely to meet all the assessment criteria and you should consider carefully what else you need to include.
Format
For ease of reading for your tutor, we suggest the following:
• 12pt font for all text, with the exception of headings
• Double line spacing
• Standard size margins
• Numbered pages, where possible.
The final file must be submitted before the deadlines in either Microsoft Word (.docx) or Adobe PDF (.pdf) format.
Layout
Title page
Include the title of your essay, your instructor name, your group number, your name (or names of all contributors in the case of a group essay), the word count and the course title.
Main body of text
You may use subheadings if you think they will make your essay easier to follow. However, it will not always be appropriate to organise your work in this way, so please use your discretion. Please note that the inclusion of large amounts of text within tables to circumvent the word count is not acceptable. Tutors may penalise students for poor academic practice.
Reference list
Appendices
Appendices contain material which is related to the text but not suitable for inclusion in it, e.g. tables that are too detailed for text presentation. If you use appendices, they should be relevant and brief.
General pointers
• Consider your topic area carefully.
• Stick to the topic in question and avoid side tracking, as the word count is tight.
• Keep a track of references from the outset. Using a reference manager, such as EndNote, will save the frustration of searching for one or two lost references at the end.
• Avoid copying and pasting. There will be a hard stance on plagiarism. You will lose many marks for engaging in such poor academic practice and disciplinary action will ensue if picked up by the tutor.
• Reference appropriately all the sources you have used.
• If the assignment instructions indicate that your essay should be aimed at a particular audience, keep this audience in mind throughout.
• Spelling should agree with best usage and should be consistent throughout.
• Your essay should be proofread carefully and corrections made before submission
