This is one of three videos produced by the BBC, which aired on the Discovery Channel (The other two were Medieval London and Revolutionary Paris). What you will see, is how people lived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in New York City. The problems they faced and how they were solved. With this assignment, guess what I am trying to accomplish, is giving students something different, attempting to stay away from the stereotypical history essay or DBQ. What you are to do – watch the video and write a reaction paper. Here is the link to the video https://www.dailymotion.com/video/xydr3u

The important thing to remember, this documentary presents many problems and solutions, DO NOT attempt to address them all. Pick two or three important issues and write about them. In the past, some students have written the paper through the lens of their personal experiences as an immigrant or the child of immigrant parents. Or while many of the problems of the late 19th and early 20th centuries have been solved, some students have looked at it as we are in a “New Gilded Age”. Another suggestion, some of you may have been born and raised in New York City, you might want to contrast and compare what you thought you knew and what was learned by watching the video If you are having problems please contact me via the Webcourses email section and I will also have a pinned discussion for you to discuss your ideas for this paper with each other. Please write a minimum of 3 full pages. Please pay attention to Section IV of essay writing on the syllabus.
