L. 1. The first Roman Catholic translations of the Bible into English were made by teachers at
the English College in Douai (in present day) France.
2. The New Testament translation was published in Rheims (France) in the year 1582;
the Old Testament translation was published (in two parts) in 1608 and 1610.
3. These translations were revised under the auspices of Richard Challoner, Bishop of Debra
(1691-1781) with substantial use of the King James Version; these revised translations
were published in 1749, 1750, and 1752.
4. The Challoner revision of the Douay-Rheims Bible is still used by many (traditional)
English-speaking Catholics to this day.
M. 1. The first complete edition of the Bible in (North) America was published in 1782.
2. Thereafter substantial numbers of of Bibles began to be published in the USA; the first
Roman Catholic Bible was published (in 48 weekly installments) in Philadelphia in 1784.
N. 1. A revision of the King James Version — the “Revised Version” (RV) was published in
England in 1881 (New Testament), 1885 (Old Testament), and 1894 (the Apocrypha).
2. In the United States, the RV was edited (with minor changes) and published — as the
Revised Version, Standard American Version — in 1901.
O. 1. The Revised Standard Version (RSV) was first published in 1946 (New Testament), 1952
(Old Testament), and 1957 (Apocrypha) at a modern English translation for Protestants.
2. A Catholic Edition thereof (RSV-CE) was published in entirety in 1965 and 1966.
It has been republished as the RSV Second Catholic Edition (RSV-2CE) in 2006.
3. The RSV can be said to have become the first serious challenge to the popularity of the
King James Version.
P. Numerous additional modern English versions and translations of the Bible have been
published since the 1960s.
Q. 1. The emergence of the Internet has facilitated the study of the Bible. 2. Many versions
and translations of the Bible (including the RSV and the RSV-2CE) are accessible and
