1. Imagine that a special Presidential Committee has been assembled to understand the
structure of our society and how it impacts the legal institution and has contacted you. The
Presidential Committee wants you to come and make a presentation based on your expertise about
what you have learned in Dr. Hill’s Sociology 002 course this semester because they want to know
what do race, class and gender have to do with the Criminal Justice System (CJS) and the Juvenile
Justice System (JJS). They believe that the Criminal Justice System is rock solid and stands on
“innocent until proven guilty”, that “justice” prevails, and that as the legal symbol suggests, the
CJS and JJS is blind to race, class, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, etc. I want you to be
their expert witness and help them understand how race, class and gender impact Law and Justice.
Based on your testimony they will reconsider some laws and policies that they thought were race,
class, and gender neutral. You have the lives of millions in your hands. Explain to them why
Sociology and the Sociological Imagination Matters. I would like you to use the lectures Dr. Hill
presented on The Criminal/Juvenile Justice System, The War on Drugs, and Michelle Alexander’s
book, The New Jim Crow. Please use the films watched to indicate how Inequality could exist in
the CJS. (Note: You can discuss any of the films watched during any part of your presentation).
Last, make your final remarks to the Presidential Committee and Recommendations for equity and
social justice to prevail in the CJS and JJS.
