Literary Analysis Paper on Flannery O’Connor’s “Good Country People”

Your paper should be a minimum of 600 words and should include at least THREE quotations from the story but no more than five. For quotations, you will need tags/lead-ins and citations, including page numbers.

In your introduction paragraph, include the following:

attention grabber
author’s name and story title enclosed in quot. marks
brief summary of story (no more than three sentences)
thesis that contains main idea of paper
Attention grabbers can be questions, quotations (cite if not well known), brief stories (anecdotes), facts/statistics (cite if not well-known), etc.

Your thesis must address the story’s use of humor and overall point/lesson.

EXAMPLE THESIS: Flannery O’Connor uses humor in the story “Good Country People” to demonstrate the importance of self awareness and identity.
SAMPLE THESIS: In the story “Good Country People,”Flannery O’Connor uses humor to show the negative consequences of hubris.
SAMPLE THESIS: Toni Cade Bambara’s story “The Lesson” uses a humorous, immature narrator to demonstrate social inequality.

Each body paragraph should focus on one specific controlling idea. Consider the following plan:

Body One: Analysis of main character and significant personality traits and goal(s). Support with textual evidence.
Body Two: Analysis of specific areas of story that contain humor and contribute/support character’s conflict in completing goal(s). Support with textual evidence.
Body Three: Discussion of story’s ending and explanation of overall lesson(s) that story provides. Support with textual evidence.

In the conclusion, you should briefly summarize your entire paper, again remarking on the main character’s personality traits, goals, conflicts, and overall outcome. You should also address the story’s value to the general reading audience–what can be gained from reading the story (lasting impression – great place to revisit the creative title and/or attention grabber).

**If you used a source for an attention-grabber, you must cite it too in the paper and on the Works Cited page.
