My thesis is:
Adult achievement is often related to childhood poverty and the length of time in poverty.

My introductory paragraph is:
In America, nearly 11 million children are living in poverty–that’s 1 in 7 children wondering where their next meal is coming from. Having spent four years in the foster care system, I know what it’s like to grow up poor and forgotten. One of the foster homes I stayed in housed eight kids other than myself. Given my historical tendency to make horrible short-term decisions, it’s easy to see how my difficult childhood has affected my adult life. Up until a few years ago, I was terrible with finances and rarely planned for the future. This is because adult achievement is often related to childhood adversity, particularly poverty and the length of time in poverty.
