Or, if you are off-campus, access it through the Miami system. Go to the Main Library—>Subject & Course Guides —>History —> Historical Primary Sources —> Basic Indexes and Collections of Primary Sources —> Indexes to Newspapers and Newspaper Archives —> Early American Newspapers

At some point you will likely have to sign in with Canvas authenticating credentials.
Alternatively, if you would like to look at this from the perspective of a Latin American publication, you can consult the Latin American newspapers database: https://infoweb.newsbank.com/apps/readex/?p=WHNPX&val-database-0=WHNPLAN1|WHNPLAN2. Links to an external site.
Keep in mind that some of these newspapers are written from a US (or other foreign) expat communities in Mexico or other Latin American countries, and so their sympathies regarding the war might reflect that. Try to evaluate the audience of the publication in your analysis.

IMPORTANT: Be sure to set the date range of 1846-1848 (or you can expand to the Texas independence episode, but there are not many papers covering that period, or alternatively you can expand to the Gadsden Purchase of 1854).
Write your analysis of 2 pages along the following guidelines:

Write an analysis (2 pages, typed, double spaced) that takes into consideration the historical moment in which the document was created, the intended audience, and the ways that the document contributes to a major theme of the course to date (i.e.: the construction of Mexican national identity, racial discourse, U.S-Mexico relations, myth and reality, Liberalism, or the development of political culture).

Include in your analysis the following components:

Identify the publication. Who is the intended audience? Is this for nationwide distribution, or is it for a more localized or politically defined readership?
Identify the time period of the document. How does this correspond with broader political, social, or ideological trends in Mexico at this time?
Who is the author? If you do not know the specific author, from what social class or political persuasion does he or she hail?
What are some of the clues in the text that reveal their perspective? Point here to specifics in the author’s language and tone.
Place this document in historical context. Is this a good example of a particular movement or set of ideas? Or does this represent an alternative perspective to that voiced in the textbook, or by the predominant voices of its time?
Make at least two references to the assigned readings in order to contextualize this document. Citations should be parenthetical and in-text, according to this format (Chávez 33). In most cases, making references to just the Chávez chapter should be sufficient to provide context for your newspaper article.
