What did you think about the film Arrival in relation relationship between language, language learning, and conceptions of reality?

For this project, you will watch the 2016 film Arrival and read the two assigned articles for the week. I highly recommend that you read through the two articles and complete the annotation before watching the film and then return to the readings as you complete your analysis. The film will make direct reference to the assigned readings in the plot! Once you have completed that background work, you will write a 3-4 page (double spaced, 12 point font) response to the following:

1) What did you think about the film Arrival in relation relationship between language, language learning, and conceptions of reality? 2) Using quotes from the two assigned texts, discuss how the film uses the work of Benjamin Whorf and connects with Dorothy Lee’s article on experiences of time. 3) There are a lot of reviews and discussions of this film online from linguists and anthropologists. Do a search for these sources and make note of some of the debates about the film particularly in relation to linguistic determinism. 4) Do you think the film uses a relativistic or deterministic approach with regard to language and thought? 5) Do you have any opinion about how the concepts of language and time are used in the film’s plot as related to the debates you discovered in your search? Be sure to provide citations/links for your sources.
