Title: Organized Crime Violence in Mexico
Research Question: How does organized crime in Mexico impact its political and social life?
Argument:
Drug lords’ violence and dominance allowed them to control the lives of thousands of local government officials and political candidates through corruption-producing strategies.
The war in Mexico has brought wealth to cartel leaders, but it has also brought untold suffering to innocent, loyal civilians caught in the crossfire.
Professors requirements:
Aim: Analytic papers provide you with the opportunity to read deeply on a course topic that especially interests you. The paper should be guided by a clear argument and present a clear organizational structure. Regardless of the argument you make, be sure to engage and cite relevant sources, using concrete examples from specific countries to support your claims.
The paper will be 5,000 words (+/- 100 words) and should include at least five academic sources. Your goal in this paper should be to support a particular argument with relevant sources. The paper should include the following sections:

Title: It should capture the topic and argument of your paper.
Number of words.
Abstract (100 words). The abstract should be a summary of the research question, argument, and cases.
Introduction (2 pages). In the introduction, students should include the research question and argument, as well as an overview of the empirics and the whole paper’s structure (“roadmap”).
Literature Review and Development of your Argument (3 pages). See Brancati Chapter 4 and Babbie Chapter 17. How have different authors answered your question? (Organize the Literature Review by topic and not by author) How do you construct your argument? What is the outcome you are trying to explain? What explains that outcome?
Empirics (8-10 pages). If you are using case studies, how do your cases contribute to answering your research question? Only include relevant information to answer your question: avoid long background descriptions of national history. Consider adding sub-sections and a Table that represents the variation you are explaining.
Conclusion (1-2 pages). The conclusion should summarize the main points of the paper and may open new questions.
The bibliography should include all cited works. Please use parenthetical or in-text citations. For the in-text system the department follows the Modern Language Association (MLA) format. Please familiarize yourself with the style guides for the two systems, which can be found on the Politics website (https://politics.ucsc.edu/undergraduate/citation.html). Please cite every and all ideas that are not your own.
