Johari Window

JOHARI WINDOW ASSIGNMENT

Chapter 8 Improving Personal Relationships
“The Johari Window model is a useful way to illustrate self-disclosure. A window representing a single person can illustrate the amount of information that an individual reveals to others, hides, is blind to, and is unaware of. Communicators disclose personal information for a variety of reasons and benefits: catharsis, reciprocity, self-clarification, self-validation, identify management, relationship maintenance, enhancement, and social influence.

Please go to the following website and do the Johari Window Profile exercise: Read this entire page before you copy and paste this link!
http://kevan.org/johari
Please make sure that you click on 6 traits (not just 5) to describe yourself. Carefully follow the directions on this website. Once you finish your profile, copy and paste your personal link (read directions) onto an email* that you will send to at least 10 people you know, asking them to submit their responses to the designated link. When at least 5 people have submitted their responses to the designated link, please copy and paste the FINAL version of your personal Johari Window profile into a word document (also add the answers to the questions at the end of this document). Next you will attach this document into the designated section.

I included an example of my Johari Window Profile in your Chapter 8 Assignment Icon or you can click on this link to view it. http://kevan.org/jh/moonbeam – click View Their Window.

I also wrote a message* you can copy to send to your friends. The only difference would be that you fill in the name you chose when you filled out your personal Johari Window (mine is moonbeam – below in link).

Example email message to send to your friends
*Please take a moment to fill out the following Johari Window for me (link below). You just have to choose six (make sure you choose 6, not 5) words in a list that describe me. Then you submit it with your name (or anonymous). The results will show up in my chart along with other people’s submissions. This is an assignment for my Introduction to Communication class at CFCC. I really appreciate your help.

http://kevan.org/jh/moonbeam *change moonbeam to the name you submitted for your Johari Window before you send this message in an email to your friends, family and/or co-workers.

Now go to the link at the top of this page. The directions are clear. Follow them carefully. Refer back to this document if you need extra instructions.

DO NOT FORGET THE 2ND PART OF THIS ASSIGNMENT BELOW:After you cut and paste your final Johari Window into a document, please write a short paper using the following prompt: Are you surprised by the results of your Johari window? Do you feel that others see you as you see yourself? Was there any word that you felt described you perfectly, but others didn’t use (Not Known to Others pane)? Choose one of the traits with the highest percentage and explain how/why you think others have recognized this quality in you. Give some examples of how you demonstrate your highest rated traits.
This window is a version of a Johari Window that allows you to get a lot of feedback from others. I think you will find it very interesting and helpful. The Blind Spot pane does not truly represent what you do not know about yourself. There may be many words that other people used to describe you, that you also think describe you. Since you can only choose six words, you may still have chosen many of the words in your Blind Spot pane if you could have chosen more. Despite this limitation, the Blind Spot pane is very helpful to show you how others perceive you.
