Assignment:
For this term paper assignment, you are to critically evaluate the position of either the Federalists or the
Democratic-Republicans during the early Republic. You have been given a packet of information with
links to important primary sources on seven different issues, so use those primary sources as the
foundation for your paper. Supplement those sources with a secondary source that can shed some
additional light on this period.
In your paper, you must answer the following questions:
 What led to the rise of the two political parties?

 What were the characteristics of each party?
 Critically analyze the two arguments that you think are the strongest. Choose from any of the
seven topics presented in your research packets.
 Critically analyze the weakest argument from your packet. It is unacceptable to claim that there
is not a weakest argument.
 Conclude with what happened at the end of the early Republic.
