ENG 112 Midterm Exam Essay We read literature because stories, drama, and poetry are timeless. Their themes resonate with our souls. Have you ever heard the idiom, “The more things change, the more they stay the same”? Times may change, but the human condition stays the same, so the themes for the stories we study in literature have main ideas or underlying meanings that we can still relate to, even the first stories ever written, such as “The Epic of Gilgamesh” or “Genji” (works you might study in 200 level courses of World Literature). These stories serve as a gateway for critical thinking into a deeper level of thought.
By studying literature, we learn the history of the eras in which stories were written, and we can use that history to learn not only about others but also about ourselves.
For your midterm exam, you will tell me what you have learned so far from the short stories and dramas we have covered so far this semester. You will briefly discuss the following components for the topics we have discussed.
This assignment must be written in the form an essay. You will use Modern Language Association style of writing and cite your discussions with parenthetical citations and a Works Cited page. You will use only your textbook for this paper, no outside sources!
For each story listed in this assignment, discuss the following components:
Discuss the specific culture and historical time period in which each story was written
Discuss interesting facts about the author
Discuss how each setting affects the plot
Discuss at least one main theme for each work
Discuss how the roles of women were represented in the era in which the story takes place? (You will not need to do this for The Cask of Amontillado).
What did you learn that you didn’t already know?
How will you use your new knowledge for that specific story?
You will briefly discuss each component for the following stories and dramas in this order:
The Jewelry
The Cask of Amontillado
The Birthmark
Trifles
The Story of an Hour
Please use Modern Language Association style for your paper. You are to use Times New Roman, 12 point font, your text as your reference, page numbers, etc. You must include parenthetical citations in the body of your text. Please use the pamphlet you purchased from the bookstore to guide your writing to avoid plagiarism. If you did not purchase one, you may use Purdue University’s website to help you with your paper. Your paper MUST be at least 4 pages in length.
Since it is an essay, you must include an introductory paragraph and a concluding paragraph. Each story will have a separate paragraph (or more if needed). Discuss the components listed above. Reference your work with evidence from your textbook. You will need at least one reference for each story. Do not research the components online! You will submit your paper to SafeAssign, and it will catch plagiarism! If you plagiarize, you will receive a zero on your paper and risk failing the course.
If you failed to read any of the works, or if you did not read or watch the videos I provided, you will need to go back and do it in order to complete this assignment.
Your midterm exam counts as 10% of your grade, which is an entire letter grade.
You will be graded on the following rubric:
Did you cover all six of the literature stories and dramas? Were your answers thorough?
Did you provide the minimum writing length of 4 pages?
Did you use Modern Language Association (MLA) writing style?
Did you use correct grammar and mechanics?
Did you go beyond the requirements of this assignment and wow me with your intellect?
