Opinion pieces are a critical part of the policy-making process, and as a social worker, you will be in a position to add to your
voice and experience to the policy debate using this format. In this assignment, you will create a persuasive and evidence-based opinion piece focused on a COVID-19-related policy and its impact on the clients you work with (or hope to work with) using a creative format (written, audio, video, etc.).

How does it affect your clients (use specific, deidentified examples)?
Why is it important to you as a social worker?
You can choose a more written format for your opinion piece, such as a letter to the editor or a letter to your state legislator.
Or, given the influence of digital media on advocacy, you may decide, instead, to use a more digital format, such as a YouTube
video, Twitter campaign, or podcast. You are not limited to these ideas, and may pursue a different media format. I am happy to review any alternatives to these options.
Keep in mind your intended audience as you develop your opinion piece. Written responses must be limited to 300-1000 words (double-spaced, 12-point font) or videos to 3 minutes.

Though not required, please consider submitting your assignment to a media outlet or legislator. Social media formats can be
submitted by tagging/mentioning media outlets. You can search online for ideas on how to accomplish this. Should you decide to contact a media outlet, be sure to either cc: me if it’s an email or tag me if it’s on social media.
