Projects are to be based on criteria covered below.
Unlike the review, this should be more loosely formatted.
• Use outline form or free association.
• Well communicated ideas are important, not grammatically correct papers.
• 4 – 5 pages in length.
• Submit final projects as a Word document.
• Save as a Word document with your name in the saved title!
You have the opportunity to direct a production: which will you choose? Go to the Library and pick a play that interests you. If there is a favorite play that you are very familiar with, you may use that as well.
You have been granted an ample budget and access to a variety of types of theatrical spaces. Imagine your ideal production and describe it in your responses to the following groups of questions. You do not need to answer every question listed below, but please address at least two or three from each group. No profanity laced plays. No lewd subject matter. Be creative!
Read each question carefully, and make sure your answers are complete. Take your time in choosing your play and formulating your ideas. Do not wait until the last minute to begin this assignment.
1. Your overall Vision: Why have you chosen this play to produce for a contemporary audience? What about the play (the characters, the themes, the plot) seems to be important in creating its appeal? What emotional and/or intellectual impact do you want your production of this play to have on your audience?
2. Space: What kind of theatre space seems most appropriate for your production? Why?
3. Acting: What style of acting seems to be required for this play? What skills or attributes must be principal actors possess? Describe the “ideal cast” for this play (you may use the names of real actors if you like). What scenes should be the most demanding for the actor? Why?
4. Directing: Identify some important unifying ideas in the play, and describe how these ideas might relate to your director’s concept or approach to the production. What sort of approach to rehearsals would be the most exciting or appropriate for your play? What would be the most important skills that you as the director of this play should have? Describe the blocking of a key moment in the text.
5. Design: What information or ideas does each of the design areas (scenery, costumes, lighting, makeup, sound) need to convey to the audience? How simple or elaborate should the design elements be? Describe an example of a good costume, and important element of the set, or an important lighting cue, remembering to include as much detail as possible. Include simple diagrams, chars or drawings.
6. Audience: Describe your ideal audience. If you were in charge of setting ticket prices, how much would one ticket be? How will you choose to market your production to attract your ideal audience?
If you would like to try a radical approach to the play (for instance a non- traditional casting, setting it in a different time or place, rearranging the text, etc.) by all means do so. You must, however, describe your approach in full detail and justify your reasons for taking it.
