DQ 4: Violence (Chapter 15)
‘Violent Crime’ is a category of crime which includes aggravated assault, robbery, rape, and murder/homicide. Louisiana consistently ranks in the top 10 of such crimes in the United States. For example, the state of Louisiana has the highest homicide rate in the United States. In fact, the homicide rate for Louisiana is almost double that of the national average. Louisiana ranks second in the nation for the largest rate of women killed by men. And fourth in the nation for firearm mortality. Louisiana is not a safe place to live!
There are several areas in Louisiana which are particularly high in crime. These include Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Houma-Thibodaux, Monroe, New Orleans, and Shreveport.
Think about your own experiences, do a little research online, and give us the answers to the following questions:
What are some reasons you think Louisiana has such high violent crime rates? Why are these rates higher in specific areas of Louisiana? What are some factors that contribute to violence in Louisiana and these specific areas of Louisiana? What are some things that can be done to decease the rates of violent crime? (HINT: Be specific when you tell me what can be done & WHO/what agency will carry it out.
