Prior to the Civil War, continental expansion and foreign affairs were often indistinguishable from one another, and both contributed to the rise of nationalism in the United States. In an essay, explain the relationship between these three factors (continental expansion, foreign affairs and nationalism). How did each contribute to or reinforce the other?
This essay is a conceptual one that requires you to tie together real events and people’s reactions into an analysis and a set of coherent conclusions. Admittedly, it’s a bit tough to wrap your mind around, because it’s one of the more abstract and conceptual problems in American history.
