Define the basic principles of restorative justice.

STUDENT ONE
Reading the chapter I found that the principles of restorative justice are to bring justice to an offender without using the concept of “ “punishment,” “deterrence,” and “incarceration” “. ( pg.201).
Instead they would take a different route and lean more towards the offenders future. As a team they can establish why the offender acted out, get the offender to notice that in themselves as they work together on a better understanding to help get the offender get on the best track in life. Leading them away from offensive situations in the future. A restorative program that I read about is “Negotiation, mediation, consensus-building, and peacemaking have been part
of the dispute resolution process” (pg. 204). This is where a offender is found with the Victim, the officer, the family and company of family, community, school, and court gather and talk about everybody’s concerns and emotions on the crime that was committed. The offender also has the opportunity to share the same information on his/her feelings and express regret and grief among that aspect. The offender can also express how he/ she has the desire to change their ways and resort to better behavior and judgment in their actions. I personally think that this is a great tool on younger offenders, because it shows the importance of having someone to talk to and express themselves as well as show the offender that there are people who will sit down and listen and come together as a community to help get them on a better track in life. This can work on a youthful person because mentally sometimes that’s all a child will get, and if there were more adults that raised concern about juveniles actions and took children who have issues under their wings there would be a multitude of change surrounding this world.
