The riddle of the Sphinx, solved by the tragic hero to save Thebes from destruction prior to the beginning of the play, informs the action of Oedipus the King. What walks on four legs in the morning, two in the afternoon, and three at night? Oedipus crawled as a baby, further hampered by pierced and pinioned ankles. He walked proudly as a grown man, the king of Thebes, and the most powerful of men. However, after revealing his identity, he blinds himself and exits the stage in eternal darkness, hobbling along on three legs with only a stick to guide him. Ironically, while Oedipus knows the answer to the Sphinx’s riddle, “humankind,” he doesn’t know the answer to the fundamental question of his own identity.
